“At any given moment you have the power to say
this is NOT how the story is going to end.”
– Anonymous
If you have been feeling as if life is getting much harder, I feel your pain. I feel exactly the same way.
In the past 6 months, I have dealt with an 8-week recovery from pneumonia, extreme allergies, and just as soon as I started feeling better…my husband had emergency surgery to re-attach his retina. Something neither of us saw coming (yes, pun intended!) and has a 3-month recovery period during which he must walk bent over at the waist the majority of the time.
My husband is a Realtor, so it has been particularly challenging for us both. He is requiring much more of my assistance in serving his clients, maintaining our home and taking care of our pets. At the same time I continue to focus on and give attention to my own growing coaching organization.
Since I am not Mother Theresa, I am admitting that I have often had fearful thoughts during each of these experiences.
Because I am committed and accountable to ‘walking my talk’ as a Chi-Lifter, I am aware of each of these fearful thoughts when they pop into my mind and I don’t dismiss or ignore them.
Instead, I explore the fears. I look at them from every angle asking myself questions, such as:
- Is this my fear or a fear that I have inherited from my family?
- Is this fear grounded in reality or am I anticipating something that is not likely to happen?
- Do I choose to keep this fear or do I prefer to be creative in creating other possibilities?
The only way that I have been able to keep moving forward and stepping around the blocks that fears create is by asking myself these questions. By the time I get to the 3rd question, I am always ready to create new possibilities and then create actions that turn the possibilities into reality.
For example, when I developed pneumonia, I was ‘afraid’ that I would have to go to the hospital. That would have been exactly the path taught me by my parents. When I realized that this was an inherited fear, I chose a new possibility that I could boost my wellness through more natural approaches. I also created a ‘Strategic Attraction Plan’* to attract to me the perfect wellness practitioner to support my intentions. It took a bit longer, however, I was able to remain in a comfortable setting at home with my husband and dogs…doing it my way.
Another example is the fear I had about taking care of our 5-month old poodle puppy, who has unbounding energy, during my husband’s long-recuperation. Lucy had gotten used to going for long walks each day and that was not going to be feasible during the first few weeks after Bill’s surgery since staying close to him was required. So, I was afraid that Lucy would get unruly and hard-to-handle. I realized that I was creating a fear that had not yet happened based on hearing stories from other people’s experiences. I chose a different possibility…that I could attract someone willing to take my dog for walks and keep her entertained every day. So, the day before Bill’s surgery I created a ‘Strategic Attraction Plan’ to attract to me Lucy’s perfect companion.
That same day, Bill was taking the trash to the curb and saw our next door neighbors, who we would often see in the park with their dog. They began chatting and Bill let them know that he would be having surgery the next day so we would not be seeing them as often. Their immediate response was, “Would you like us to walk Lucy for you? We can take her when we take our dog out.” Just that easy!
And, the relationship between their dog and Lucy has been a joy to watch develop. They love each other so much that they bark to each other from their back yards when they are not together at one of our homes. Even better than I could have imagined!
What fears have you been keeping in your thoughts?
Are you ready to use my 3 questions to explore those fears? If so, I would love for you to share your experience of using these questions. Thanks for taking a moment to comment below.
BTW, here’s one of my favorite pix of my two pups – Lucy and Tess (my 11-year-old yorkie-poo). If you want to comment below about how cute they are…I would love that, too. LOL!
