“The most dangerous leadership myth is that leaders are born — that there is a genetic factor to leadership. This myth asserts that people simply either have certain charismatic qualities or not. That’s nonsense; in fact, the opposite is true. Leaders are made rather than born.” –Warren G. Bennis
This week, my pup, Tess, made it through an intense dental surgery. Preparing her for it, waiting for it to be completed, and then helping her recuperate, I was reminded of the chapter on self-accountability I wrote for my book,
Chi-To-Be!
My book is written for people who choose to be Attraction Masters and I was inspired to write that chapter from my belief that most people who are seen as leaders did not set out to lead others. I believe that what they set out to do was to develop their qualities and personality traits so they could be people who other people could count on.
They chose to be people of their word!
And, to be someone who keeps their word requires that we commit our self to doing only what we intend to do….which requires us to stop being ‘people pleasers’ and start being ‘self-accountable.’
The question that transforms us from being a ‘people pleaser’ into being self-accountable is to ask yourself: “in what ways do I want to be counted upon by me?”
This question makes it possible for me to respond to others in ways that are self-accountable.
When partnered with Personal Accountability, how we respond to others is transformed. Responsibility becomes ‘Response-ability’ — the ability to ‘choose’ to respond or not respond consciously and powerfully.
Here’s how I see Self-Accountability and Response-ability as a Process:
Step 1: Identify what I want to be Accountable to be, do, or achieve.
Step 2: When Life brings an opportunity or a situation into my life, I first choose if I wish to respond or not respond…whichever will bring me closer to the fulfillment of my own goals.
Step 3: If I choose to respond, I do so in a way that moves me closer to the fulfillment of my goals.
Being Self-Accountable Makes Us More Attractive
I choose to be self-accountable as a care-giver who keeps her pets healthy and happy…someone who gives conscious care and attention to maintain the wellbeing of my dogs. I am counting on myself to attract whatever is essential for providing that perfect amount of care and attention in harmony with my other goals.
One night a few years ago, without warning, one of my dogs (Maggie) began having seizures. The first one appeared as if she was having a bad dream since it happened while she was sleeping. I responded by waking her up, comforting her until she fell back to sleep and staying awake the rest of the night to ensure she was fine. While I was tired in the morning, she appeared to be just fine and I chose not to take her to the vet.
That evening, I made sure she was sleeping peacefully before I went to sleep. In the middle of the night, my husband and I were both awakened by the sound of her metal bed banging against the floor. Maggie was experiencing another seizure and this one was much more violent than the one the night before. There was no doubt that I now had to respond by taking her to the animal clinic in the morning. After again staying awake until Maggie fell back to sleep and remaining awake to ensure she was alright until the morning (both response choices), we took her to see our vet who recommended to give her a prescription drug.
Earlier that morning, I had consulted my natural therapies books (another response choice) to identify what would be the best course of action if the vet determined that Maggie was having epileptic seizures. I had discovered in one of the books that this drug was known to cause very serious side-effects. I shared this information with the vet, who confirmed my research. So, consciously aware of my Self-Accountability, I chose to respond by refusing the prescription. The vet told me that there were other medications with fewer side-effects, but he was reluctant to start her on those because it would be more difficult to wean her off of them if she outgrew the seizures (a response choice). He also said it was possible that Maggie might not ever have another seizure.
Based on that information, my husband and I chose to respond by taking Maggie home and watching to see if she had any other events before giving her the medication.
Sure enough, Maggie had two more seizures that night. My husband and I decided to respond by researching veterinarians who used natural approaches and found one that could see her the next day.
The new vet explained to us that her response was to give Maggie another prescription medication, but in such a small dose that it would be easy to wean her off the drug when she outgrows the seizures. And, we chose to be self-accountable for ensuring we gave Maggie the new medication.
An Inspiration from Chi-To-Be! Master™ DeZ O.:
“What I learned through this exercise is Accountability begins with me being response-able to myself first above all else! I had several opportunities with friends and my son to explore the differences in what accountability means to different people and the degree of its importance to them. There was no right or wrong view, just different. In one conversation, I was inspired to listen and feel how I might set myself up for the possibility of disappointment when I attempt to live up to another’s expectations of me….a good reminder that accountability begins and ends with me.”
An Inspiration from Master Chi-Lifter Kathy Grannes:
“I believe we all have greatness within us. Last year I wanted to, but I didn’t believe I could, change my life. Since then I have been on a journey of self-accountability. I have been learning daily rituals (that I stick to). I have learned to know when I am being self-accountable and when I am not. I have learned a deeper meaning of doing my best. I have been more accountable in my word choices to bring more clarity to a conversation and that leaves less room for assuming. I have pushed past my fears and doubts. I am doing the daily things that are making my new reality the one I want to live in.”
Now is the perfect time to ask yourself: “in what ways do I want to be counted upon by me?”
