“Planning is a process of choosing among those many options. If we do not choose to plan, then we choose to have others plan for us.” — Richard I. Winwood
I am often asked how I get so much done in a day. It’s because I don’t make the #1 ‘productivity-killing’ mistake that most people make.
For example, when I share with my clients that I schedule my days by first doing what I want to do towards achieving my goals, they often tell me that they do not feel they could do the same because they would feel too guilty putting their selves first on their list.
That is until I ask them if they feel their goals are important to the world that they be achieved.
They always answer that question with a resounding ‘YES’!
Then, I ask them if what they have been spending their time doing for others is just as important. Their answer is usually, ‘Some are and some are not.’
These activities could involve making dinner for their family, driving a child to an after-school activity, taking time to listen to a friend, completing a project due for their boss, etc.
As they identify the activities that they are doing for others which they feel are important, they discover that those activities always help them to achieve their own goals in some way, too.
Conversely, the activities that my clients do for others … and which lower their energy … are activities that in no way help them to achieve their own goals. And, when I ask why they continue to do them, they tell me that they do not know how to say ‘no’ without feeling guilty.
If you feel the same…then here’s the good news!
There is only one way to say ‘No’ to others without feeling guilty — and that is to schedule each of your days by putting on the calendar the activities that are most important to you to accomplish and which will keep you energized from day to day.
And, when others ask you to do something for them that you do not want to do, you can honestly say that you are already busy…because your schedule is busy doing what is most important to you!
